This is a movie I've wanted to see for some time ever since I saw the model sheets in THE FLEISCHER STORY by Leslie Carbanga. I enjoy GULLIVER"S TRAVELS, the first Fleischer animated feature but it doesn't come close to this movie which I found totally mesmerizing. TCM showed it last night, I was disappointed earlier in the month when I MARRIED A WITCH was not included in the Canadian schedule so I admit I had some anxiety about if this would be bumped. MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN is filled with beautiful backgrounds, great characters, cool music and story that moves with some great set pieces of human and bug world interactions. A Jimmy Stewartish grasshopper hero whose mistakes are genuine in not understanding the human world and his sexy bug gal, and the bug town folk go up against the encroaching human world and Penguin like beetle and his insect thugs. So here is a whole mess of pics from this wonderful movie. I don't love television stations but I do love TCM.

Mummy Bat
Tho I'm sad to see her go, Mike Mignola is now the owner of this piece and a better home I couldn't ask for her. Mike has been fan of The Happy Undertaker for some time and has posted on his Facebook page a number of times how much he enjoys the strips which I've always been surprised by and appreciated since I've been a huge fan of his work and his comments have always been encouraging. Anyway, the horror kid in me thinks its cool he wanted to buy this piece and she'll be hanging out in his place.
Car Sketches
Morning Baldwin St. Car sketches.. Went to the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera show yesterday which was really great. I like his murals but prefer Kahlo's paintings a lot more and all the photos of her were fantastic. My favorite Rivera work was the early years in Paris that a had a cubist/impressionistic vibe. Had lunch at related event at a mexican restaurant called Frida that was delicious and ended the day wit a ghost walk.

The Halloween Tree
I love the original cover of The Halloween Tree. I recently got Ray Bradbuy's From the Dust Returned a book I've never read that has all his Elliot family stories (tho I think updated versions of his old stories like The Homecoming ) intertwined with newer stuff. The cover is Charles Addam's original magazine illustration for the Homecoming from the late forties. A beautiful piece. Apparently Addams was going to illustrate a book of monster family stories that Bradbury was going to write at that time but it never got going. How unfortunate they couldn't find a publisher to place it with as it would have been amazing especially since those early Bradbury stories are my favorite of his . Also, Igor awaits his breakfast tuna and meat soup.

Halloween Books
Pretty cool to see Working Mummies beside The Halloween Tree and Georgies Halloween from this pic of reviews of Halloween books (old favorites and new) from Giftsoc.com where the reviewer called Working Mummies one of their new favorites.

October Spooks
This is a older piece done for a Toronto music paper October issue contents page which I erased out, I did a month in their yearly cartoonists calendar for 3 years or so as well. I don't ink too much with a brush anymore but I still like this one and I'd like to do a longer story all brush.
Lurid
I got a nice gift of a skull sketchbook and Nosferatu bookmark all the way from Venice on the weekend. I really like the paper in the sketchbook hope I can find a equivalent here but thats unlikely at least in sketchbook form.
A nice thrift store find of some classic lurid paper backs including a couple from writers I'm a big fan of (Dave Goodis and Chester Himes) in original paperbacks.

HAUNTED HORROR #1!
From the pre-code comic maniacs who brought you THE CHILLING ARCHIVES OF HORRROR series from YOE BOOKS comes HAUNTED HORROR # 1 in comic stores 10/10/12. Co-editor Steve "Karswell" Banes runs the indispensable HORRORS OF IT ALL blog so you know this comic is chock full of the ghastliest, graphic fare from a simpler time before the man came in and made some rules about what could be in comics and took away some fun. Now, thanks to Craig and Steve those times are back, so raise your glass and toast the doomed that await within its pages.

More Ghost Stories
I couldn't ask for a better way to start October then this fantastic find on my afternoon bike ride for 3 dollars. M. R. James is one of the greatest ghost story writers and tho I have everything by him in the beautiful and definitive Ash-Tree collection having an original printing of one of his books with a killer cover like this from 1924 is much nicer. I know what I'll be reading tonight..
Halloween Treasure
Its October and tho I'm not planning any official countdown I'm going to post a spooky drawing or image along the way.
Zine Machine
Fun times at the Zine Machine on Saturday tho after being holed up finishing up projects and not leaving the house much the last couple of months it was a bit jarring to be drawing in a loud, crowded bar. Don't worry I survived.
