Watched Sorry Wrong Number, a film noir I've wanted to see, last night but didn't have time for sketches.

Found out I should be receiving my F & G's for Revolutionary Friends soon which I"m looking forward to seeing. Today is a big clean up day and my favorite part of cleaning is taking breaks to look at stuff  like the Chuck Jones  Crawford book, his unrealized animation project and very short lived newspaper strip (5 months). Filled with lovely Jones drawings and the strips are very funny with some surprising stuff in them. These are boards from the sixties.

Here's the Adam Rex I own from Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich.. maybe my favorite page.

and more fun stuff..

Richard Boleslawski

Whenever TCM has a day of 30's pre-code movies I always try to record or watch.  Its a great period, usually wonderfully designed in art deco/ depression modern, with a "who's afraid of the big bad wolf" optimism mixed with the seedier realities of  life  before the production code squashed overt referances to that and everybody usually is dressed great.  Richard Boleslawski directed Beauty for Sale (beautifully photographed by James Wong Howe) was one I saw for the first time recently and totally dug. Set around the lives of beauty parlor girls in 1933 who look  like they could be in a Flash Gordon comic strip the film is filled with great outfits, wise cracking dialogue (tho one characters running jokes are as annoying to the viewer as the women) and some stunningly photographed tragic scenes. Some of my sketches from it.

Don't Call Me Pruneface!

Should be coming out in sofcover at some point next year. Its a book I illustrated that I always loved..the story not the art...and I've read reviews over time that have puzzled me. I could get long winded about all the reasons I like the story and why it makes perfect sense to me tho I can see why some adults have a problem with it.. tho I think they're wrong.  Anyway heres a  couple of images.

The Black Doll

A excellent surprise at one of my favorite book stores in the city. Edward Gorey's Black Doll  something I've wanted to pick up.

Revolutionary Friends

Not out till next April but available for pre-order on Amazon, the next children's book I illustrated is  the story of the bond that was formed during  the American Revolution by George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette taking place mostly in the beautiful, rolling  but war ravaged landscapes and colonial homes of Pennsylvania.

The Happy Undertaker Episode 77

Here's the original rough and a progress shot of the latest Happy Undertaker that I posted.

Though his cage "buddy" was a  grouchy meany, I've taken a shine to Teddy who is going back home today. Not empty handed though, I'm giving him the almond milk box to do with as he pleases. See what a nice guy I am.

I love Jan Balet's children's books and illustrations and his paintings are great too.

Rosemary's Baby

Some sketches from watching the Criterion bluray ( I'd love to see the Tenant done by them).  Beautiful print  and some great extras including a excellent documentary on the composter Krzysztof Komeda.

Eye to Eternity

Drawing in progress from this morning before I go out now to check out the state of my computer.  I'll finish it up such as it is when I get back.
I don't think I've ever posted a link to The Happy Undertaker facebook page for anyone to check out here.  I'm planning on having a collection of the strips out next fall.
